Today’s Talent @ Bowdoin features alumnus Ahmad Hassan Muhammad ’10, his improvisational jazz school tour, “Improv Alive,” and music from his Portland band, Jaw Gems.
TC: What have you been up to since graduating?
AHM: The fall after I graduated (in 2010), I went on a tour throughout the East Coast and Midwest with a group of my musician friends here in Portland. Our goal throughout the tour was to introduce young people to jazz and improvisational music and to help them begin cultivating an appreciation for it. In each city within our tour we’d visit one local area school in the afternoon and play a show at a different music venue at night. We had such a great experience visiting the schools that we decided to continue doing it with more regularity and make it more than a one-time thing, and we gave it the name “Improv Alive.”
(Full details on Improv Alive can be found here.)
